How the founder of Univercell, who started off as a door-to-door salesman, became Managing Director of Univercel Telecommunications.
Sathish Babu, the founder and managing director of Tamil Nadu-based Univercell Telecommunications has come a long way.
He started his professional journey as a door-to-door salesman selling vacuum cleaners and later managing the sale of water purifiers at Eureka Forbes. These experiences helped him understand the customer’s needs and learnt how to turn a ‘No’ into a ‘Yes’. He set up his first shop in Chennai in merely 100 sq/ft garage space where he sold post-paid mobile connections, which was a tough task as in those days an incoming call would normally cost Rs.16, so people were not interested in buying cell phones. Nevertheless, he always believed in the power of mobile phones, so his second shop was a large-scale mobile retail store with an investment of Rs.15 lakh. Since then, he has been cresting in the wave of the Indian mobile revolution and evolved to become India's largest mobile retailer.
Univercell: Founded in 1997, Univercell is a leading mobile retailer in Tamil Nadu and has 450 stores in 300 locations in South India. At present, the current customer base stands at 10 million.
The company also provides E recharge to its customers.
Mr. D. Sathish Babu founded UniverCell in November, 1997.
Univercell employee number is 1500 at present time.
There are 200,000 people buying UniverCell handsets every month.
