Telenor earlier known as Uninor offers free access to Wikipedia.
Indian mobile network operator, Telenor earlier known as Uninor launched “Internet for All” campaign that offers its customers free access to Wikipedia. For the success of the campaign it partnered with the Wikimedia Foundation to eliminate any obstruction in accessing information for its mobile internet users, who find it difficult to bear mobile data charges.
As per the programme, Uninor employees engage with the teachers and students to create awareness on digital literacy with focus on Wikipedia in rural areas. The aim of the campaign is to put the repository of knowledge in the hands of people and empower the society. As per the agreement users need not pay data charges for using Wikipedia in India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Montenegro. The company is on a mission to move 50% of its users to the internet by the year 2017 by launching such socially responsible campaigns that not only benefit the poor or underprivileged living in the rural areas, but also struggling individuals in the metro cities of India.
