Cluett, Peabody & Co. Inc., owner of the ARROW brand, is the heir to a collar manufacturer that began its operations in a one-room workshop in 1852, Troy, New York. Mrs. Hannah Montague designed the very first detachable shirt collar in the 1820s to save herself the trouble of washing an entire shirt. As the detachable shirt collar gained popularity in the first half of the 19th century, Arrow started manufacturing and selling these collars under the ARROW trademark, known as Cluett, Peabody & Co. Inc. They came up with an advertising campaign featuring a stylish young man flaunting an ARROW shirt with the detachable shirt collar. He was then popularly referred to as “The Arrow Collar Man” and soon became an American Idol receiving more than 17,000 fan letters a day. This campaign gained so much momentum that the brand expanded its collection to accommodate at least 400 different styles.
